A Quiet Morning in Vuda Marina
After recovering from the challenging passage from New Zealand to Fiji, I wake early one morning with a pull toward my yoga mat. It’s still dark as I step onto the dock at 5:30 am, the marina quiet and still. The air carries the scent of salt and frangipani. I wander slowly through Vuda Marina, simply taking it all in.
Walking toward the road, I hear a voice call out, asking if I’m looking for a yoga class. Surprised, I smile and say yes. He tells me there’s a daily class at 7:00 am. Intrigued and delighted, I turn back toward the marina.
Finding My Space
Before joining any group, I decide to begin with my own practice. I find a patch of grass between small cottages, roll out my mat, and begin my Kundalini Yoga Sadhana—a morning ritual of movement, breathwork, meditation, and mantras. My body stretches open, my mind settles, and my heart feels light. Afterward, I sip a coffee by the water, watching the first light play on the horizon.
A little later, a group of six women carrying yoga mats walks past me toward the café terrace. I’ve found the yoga group.
Becoming Part of the Circle
From that day on, I practice with them regularly. Once a week, Millie leads the class, her voice guiding us into deep relaxation. On other days, different women take turns teaching. One morning, they ask if I’d like to lead a session. I say yes with a smile, introducing them to the unique depth of Kundalini Yoga.
The Power of Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga is often called the Mother of All Yogas. It weaves together physical postures, dynamic breathwork, meditation, and mantras. There are thousands of kriyas—sequences designed to awaken specific aspects of body, mind, and spirit.
You don’t need extreme flexibility to practice it; the focus is on strengthening and toning the body, sharpening the mind, and awakening intuition. It builds a strong and radiant aura, helping you move through the world with both sensitivity and strength.
A Place by the Sea
Soon, I discover a wooden yoga platform overlooking the ocean. While most of the women prefer the soft artificial grass near the restaurant, I’m drawn to the sound of the waves and the wind in my hair. Day by day, more people join me on the platform, until it becomes our morning sanctuary.
Seeds for the Future
These shared mornings remind me why I love guiding others into presence and connection. They also plant a seed for a dream Mark and I share—to one day open a retreat center, bringing together mindfulness, yoga, and meditation in a place surrounded by nature.
It all begins here, in Fiji, with my own daily practice.
