Sailing the Society Islands: A Journey Through French Polynesia’s Heart

Setting sail from Tahiti, my next adventure takes me to the Society Islands, a chain of islands in French Polynesia known for their stunning beauty, vibrant culture, and rich history. This journey promises to be a feast for the senses, a blend of breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and unforgettable experiences.

Sailing together: exploring land and sea

Sailing through the breathtaking Society Islands for three weeks with my husband was an unforgettable adventure. We navigated the crystalline waters, exploring the lush landscapes and vibrant marine life that make this archipelago so enchanting.

From the moment we set sail, each day brought new discoveries and serene moments, whether we were snorkeling in the turquoise lagoons of Bora Bora, biking through the verdant hills of Huahine, or simply enjoying the tranquil sunsets from our deck.

The bond we shared deepened as we worked together to navigate the seas, creating memories that will last a lifetime. This journey was not just about the stunning destinations but also about the companionship and love that flourished amidst the waves.

Tahiti: The Gateway to the Society Islands

Our journey begins in Tahiti, the largest island and the economic heart of French Polynesia. Tahiti is a bustling hub where modernity meets tradition. Papeete, the capital, is a vibrant city with lively markets, chic boutiques, and a rich culinary scene. After replenishing supplies and savoring the local cuisine, it’s time to set sail and explore the jewels of the Society Islands.

Moorea: The Magical Island

A short sail from Tahiti brings us to Moorea, often described as a magical island. Its jagged volcanic peaks, lush greenery, and crystal-clear lagoons create a paradise on earth. Moorea’s tranquil waters are perfect for snorkeling and diving, revealing a vibrant underwater world teeming with marine life. Exploring the island, we discover charming villages, pineapple plantations, and panoramic viewpoints like Belvedere Lookout, offering breathtaking views of Opunohu and Cook’s Bays.

Huahine: The Garden Island

Next on the itinerary is Huahine, known as the Garden Island for its lush, fertile landscape. Huahine is a place where ancient Polynesian culture thrives. The island is dotted with archaeological sites, including marae (temples) and ancient fish traps. Sailing around the island, we anchor in front of the small village of Fare, where the locals’ warmth and hospitality make every moment special. Huahine’s serene beauty and rich cultural heritage make it a hidden gem among the Society Islands.

Raiatea and Taha’a: Twin Jewels of the Leeward Islands

Sailing further west, we reach Raiatea and Taha’a, two islands enclosed by the same coral reef. Raiatea, often considered the cultural and spiritual heart of Polynesia, is home to the ancient temple of Taputapuatea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We where not able to explore Raiatea. The Maramu, a hard southerly wind, made us go to Bora Bora earlier so that my husband could get his plane home in time.

Taha’a is known as the Vanilla Island. Its lush valleys are filled with vanilla plantations, producing some of the world’s finest vanilla. Visiting Taha’a offered us a glimpse into the island’s unique treasures, starting with an enchanting tour of a pearl farm. As we learned about the intricate process of cultivating Tahitian black pearls, we were captivated by the beauty and precision involved in each step, from the careful nucleation of the oysters to the harvesting of these lustrous gems.

Our adventure continued with visits to two renowned rum factories, where we immersed ourselves in the rich flavors and aromas of locally crafted rum. At each distillery, we discovered the art of rum-making, from the selection of sugarcane to the aging process in oak barrels. Sampling the diverse varieties, we appreciated the passion and tradition behind every bottle. This exploration of Tahaa’s pearls and rum added a fascinating cultural and sensory dimension to our island journey.

Bora Bora: The Pearl of the Pacific

No journey through the Society Islands would be complete without a visit to Bora Bora, often called the Pearl of the Pacific. Bora Bora’s stunning lagoon, with its shades of turquoise and blue, is like a dream. Anchoring in the lagoon, we are surrounded by the majestic beauty of Mount Otemanu and the island’s lush greenery. Bora Bora’s luxury resorts and overwater bungalows epitomize tropical paradise, but the island’s charm lies in its natural beauty and the warmth of its people. Snorkeling, diving, and exploring the lagoon’s coral gardens provide unforgettable experiences.

Today we go snorkeling in Bora Bora, and it is truly an unforgettable experience. As soon as we dive into the crystal clear waters, we are surrounded by a vibrant world of colorful fish and beautiful coral. The water is so clear that we can see for tens of meters, and all around us we see different types of marine life, from curious tropical fish to elegant rays that glide gracefully by. Our guide is amazing and leads us to the best spots, where we even get the chance to see small reef sharks up close. It is fascinating to observe these impressive animals in their natural environment. We also stop at some shallower lagoons where we can snorkel at our leisure and enjoy the serene underwater world.

After snorkeling, we take some time to relax on the boat. While we enjoy a light lunch, we are entertained by the soft sounds of live ukulele music. The atmosphere is perfect; the food is delicious and the music adds an authentic Polynesian touch to our experience. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Bora Bora’s lagoon, it feels like we are living in a dream. This snorkeling tour not only gives us a deeper appreciation for Bora Bora’s beautiful nature, but also unforgettable memories that we will cherish forever

Reflecting on the Journey

Sailing through the Society Islands has been a journey of discovery and wonder. Each island, with its unique character and charm, has offered unforgettable experiences. From the bustling energy of Tahiti to the magical allure of Moorea, the cultural richness of Huahine, the spiritual heart of Raiatea, the aromatic valleys of Taha’a, and the stunning lagoon of Bora Bora, the Society Islands are a sailor’s dream.

This journey through French Polynesia’s heart has deepened my appreciation for the natural world and the rich tapestry of Polynesian culture, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Mark leaves to fly home and I will proceed my journey to Tonga. I feel the hurt that goes with our parting. But as Osho says: Love can be sacrificed for freedom, but freedom cannot be sacrificed for love. Our voyage through the heart of French Polynesia was not just about the stunning destinations but also about the unforgettable memories we created together.
