Sailing the Society Islands: A Journey Through French Polynesia’s Heart

Setting sail from Tahiti, my next adventure took me to the Society Islands, a chain in French Polynesia known for their beauty, culture, and history. This journey was filled with breathtaking landscapes, warm hospitality, and unforgettable experiences.

Sailing together: exploring land and sea

Sailing through the Society Islands for three weeks with my husband was an amazing adventure. We navigated the clear waters, exploring the lush landscapes and vibrant marine life that make this place so special.

Every day brought new discoveries, whether we were snorkeling in the turquoise lagoons of Bora Bora, biking through the hills of Huahine, or enjoying the sunsets from our deck.

Our bond deepened as we worked together to navigate the seas, creating memories that will last a lifetime. This journey was not just about the beautiful destinations but also about the companionship and love that grew stronger with each passing day.

Tahiti: The Gateway to the Society Islands

Our journey began in Tahiti, the largest island and the economic heart of French Polynesia. Tahiti is a bustling hub where modernity meets tradition. Papeete, the capital, is a lively city with markets, boutiques, and a rich culinary scene. After replenishing supplies and enjoying the local cuisine, we set sail to explore the Society Islands.

Moorea: The Magical Island

A short sail from Tahiti brought us to Moorea, often described as a magical island. Its jagged volcanic peaks, lush greenery, and crystal-clear lagoons create a paradise. Moorea’s waters are perfect for snorkeling and diving, revealing a vibrant underwater world. Exploring the island, we found charming villages, pineapple plantations, and stunning viewpoints like Belvedere Lookout.

Huahine: The Garden Island

Next was Huahine, known as the Garden Island for its lush landscape. Huahine is rich in Polynesian culture, with archaeological sites including marae (temples) and ancient fish traps. Anchoring near the village of Fare, we were welcomed by the locals’ warmth and hospitality. Huahine’s serene beauty and rich cultural heritage make it a hidden gem.

Raiatea and Taha’a: Twin Jewels of the Leeward Islands

Sailing further west, we reached Raiatea and Taha’a, two islands enclosed by the same coral reef. Raiatea, often considered the cultural and spiritual heart of Polynesia, is home to the ancient temple of Taputapuatea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We couldn’t explore Raiatea due to the Maramu, a strong southerly wind, which made us head to Bora Bora earlier so Mark could catch his plane home.

Taha’a is known as the Vanilla Island, with valleys filled with vanilla plantations. Visiting Taha’a, we toured a pearl farm and learned about cultivating Tahitian black pearls. We also visited rum factories, discovering the art of rum-making and sampling the varieties.

Bora Bora: The Pearl of the Pacific

No journey through the Society Islands would be complete without a visit to Bora Bora, often called the Pearl of the Pacific. Bora Bora’s stunning lagoon, with its shades of turquoise and blue, is like a dream. Anchoring in the lagoon, we were surrounded by the beauty of Mount Otemanu and the island’s lush greenery. Bora Bora’s luxury resorts and overwater bungalows epitomize tropical paradise, but the island’s charm lies in its natural beauty and the warmth of its people. Snorkeling, diving, and exploring the lagoon’s coral gardens provided unforgettable experiences.

Today we went snorkeling in Bora Bora, and it was truly unforgettable. As soon as we dove into the crystal-clear waters, we were surrounded by a vibrant world of colorful fish and beautiful coral. The water was so clear that we could see for tens of meters, and all around us were different types of marine life, from curious tropical fish to elegant rays gliding by. Our guide was amazing and led us to the best spots, where we even saw small reef sharks up close. It was fascinating to observe these animals in their natural environment. We also stopped at some shallower lagoons where we could snorkel at our leisure.

After snorkeling, we relaxed on the boat and enjoyed a light lunch with the soft sounds of live ukulele music in the background. The atmosphere was perfect; the food was delicious, and the music added an authentic Polynesian touch to our experience. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Bora Bora’s lagoon, it felt like we were living in a dream. This snorkeling tour not only gave us a deeper appreciation for Bora Bora’s beautiful nature but also unforgettable memories.

Reflecting on the Journey

Sailing through the Society Islands has been a journey of discovery and wonder. Each island, with its unique character and charm, has offered unforgettable experiences. From the energy of Tahiti to the allure of Moorea, the cultural richness of Huahine, the spiritual heart of Raiatea, the aromatic valleys of Taha’a, and the stunning lagoon of Bora Bora, the Society Islands are a sailor’s dream.

This journey through French Polynesia has deepened my appreciation for the natural world and Polynesian culture, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Mark has left to fly home, and I will continue my journey to Tonga. Parting is never easy, but as Osho says: “Love can be sacrificed for freedom, but freedom cannot be sacrificed for love.” Our voyage through French Polynesia was not just about the destinations but also about the memories we created together.
